Pinar del Rio

Pinar del Río Province is one of the areas with the greatest natural beauty. Blessed by Nature, it contains two of the six areas in Cuba that have been declared world biosphere preserves. The main attraction in this province—where the best tobacco in the world is grown—is its flora and fauna, so ecotourism is particularly important here. The province is bounded to the north by the Gulf of Mexico, to the south by the Gulf of Batabanó and to the west by the Yucatán Channel; to the east, it borders on Havana Province. It is 4220 square miles (10,931 square kilometers) in size—the third largest province in the country. The main means of access is by road, but you can also reach Pinar del Río by sea, entering the country at the María La Gorda International Scuba-Diving Center.
Pinar del Río has many famous sons. Its most famous writer was Cirilo Villaverde, one of the greatest Cuban literary figures of all time and the author of Cecilia Valdés, the most important Cuban novel of the 19th century. In another novel, Excursión a Vueltabajo, he provided a brilliant description of his home province. Music and art are represented by the composer Pedro Junco, who wrote “Nosotros” (Us), and contemporary painter Pedro Pablo Oliva.
Farm parties are the most popular celebrations in the province. They center around a typical Cuban feast of roast pork, white rice with black beans, fried ripe bananas, yucca with a garlic-and-lime-juice sauce, other vegetables and alcoholic beverages—such as Guayabita del Pinar, made from a berry that grows in the region. There are many places of scenic, anthropological, historic and cultural interest, and the province is practically surrounded by seabeds of stunning beauty.
The ecotourism all inclusive resorts, the diving packages, the cultural tourism, the health tourism, the tourism of events and the tourism of business, and until the traditional popular parties offer the opportunities to know the beautiful all inclusive holidays in the Cuban nature, the best artistic manifestations and the warm hospitality that it characterizes the attention in the all inclusive hotels, institutions of health, centers of events and cultural headquarters.
When in Pinar del Río, be sure to visit a cigar factory and see how Habano cigars—acknowledged the best in the world—are made. Moreover, this is the only place in the world, apart from Malaysia, where you can see a unique geological formation: pin-cushion hills, in the Valley of Viñales, which UNESCO has declared to be a world heritage site. Other key attractions include the Las Terrazas Tourist Community, a beautiful resort designed to blend with its natural setting and an example of sustainable development; Soroa, with its orchid garden and lovely waterfall; and the remains of French coffee plantations dating from the 19th century.
The province has comfortable hotels both in the city and in natural beauty spots. It is an ideal place for specialized tourism.
