Parque Nacional de Guanahacabibes

Located in the equal Peninsula it names, it constitutes the biggest forest reservation in the country, separated from the rest of the territory for an isthmus where there are the plains of white sands and the biggest lacustrine area of Cuba. The original vegetation is conserved, with a very rich fauna in aquatic birds, mollusks and reptiles. In a relatively reduced space it exists more than a hundred of lakes and the purest locations of sand silica (99.8 percent of purity) and also the biggest of the country. Here the pinegroves are endemic and extensive and the herbaceous stratum presents the most diverse fauna in these ecosystems.  

Guanahacabibes is a low plain with abundance of underground cavities, as the Cave of La Barca, of great wealth biospeloloqique, and natural source of fresh water in the sea. It surprises the great variety of landscapes and of ecosystems: forests always green, included those of mangrove, costs of beaches with marsh vegetation , steep high coast and sandy coast with tropical grapefruit  vegetation, mastic-tree fringes and palms.It exists a great profusion of orchids epiphyte  and terrestrial, in total 16 species, some endemic and other recently discovered ones . A great quantity of birds, butterflies, mollusks and insectivorous plants also live in this reservation.  

Puente de Bacunayagua

In the limit between the provinces of Matanzas and Havana is located the bridge of Bacunayagua (1959), the highest in Cuba with their 112 m of high, 313 of long and 16 of wide and to the one that now are added those of the viaduct, built in 1991 and 1999. 

Ciénaga de Zapata

 One of the most singular places in Cuba is the Marsh of Zapata, where several types of swamp ecosystems cohabit, fairly or little modified by the man's action. They prevail landscapes of low, marshy plains and semiswamp, on peaty deposits and calcareous rocks, with floors hidromorfichs and vegetation of natural savannas of high aesthetic and landscape value, such as The Laguna del Tesoro and the Basin of the Hatiguanico River, main fluvial artery of the area, as well as Playa Larga and Playa Girón. In their group, the vegetation of the Marsh of Zapata constitutes one of the most important green areas in Cuba and, for the own species of the flora and the fauna that it harbors, it represents a place of world interest.    

Capital of the province of the same name, it was founded on Tuesday October 13 1693 with San Carlos' name and San Severino of Matanzas. In 1813 the city received the benefits of the introduction of the printing. It is considered that year the beginning of the Gold Century of Matanzas. In 1835 the Public Library is inaugurated. At the end of the XVIII century a quick development began as a result of the arrival of French immigrants. 

The sugar, transformed into fundamental economic item during the XIX century, made of Matanzas a rich and learned city, the most prosperous in the interior of the Island. Applauded in its scenarios all kinds of celebrities of the world of the art and it housed guests as Luis Felipe of Orleans, later king from France. 

That old splendor is noticed today in the severe court neoclassicist of many of the constructions of the village and in its houses of big piazzas with wrought iron windows and thick trimmed wooden doors of nails. 

Matanzas constitutes the fundamental square of the dance complex of the rumba and cradle of the danzón - national dance - and the danzonete. 

Two wonders of the Cuban nature wait the visitor in the outskirts of the city: the Valley of Yumurí that dazzled the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca in 1930, and the Cave of Bellamar. 

Cárdenas is the city typical matancera that has imposed his calm image of bicycles and carriages. It was there where for the first time (1850) the National Flag was hoisted.

What To do?

Cueva de Bellamar

The Bellamar Caves are located in the north coast of Cuba, to some five kilometers from downtown of Matanzas. Adapted for the tourism from almost their discovery, the visitor in its interior can appreciate the effect of the time in its beautiful stalactites, stalagmites and other formations. These caves were discovered by chance in February of 1861 when a slave lost his jumper when opening a hole in the floor trying to remove a rock of lime. 
The entrance to the Caves of Bellamar is for the cavity called GothicLiving room. It is a square form chamber and it measures about 80 meters long for about 25 meters wide. In this saloon it have been given name to some of the formations; among other there is The Orchid of the Carrots, The Chapel of the Twelve Apostles, Mrs. Mamerta and perhaps the most famous is Columbus's Mantel. But the Caves of Bellamar are not only this living room, the cavity extends toward the east and the west achieving a longitude that surpasses the three kilometers long; and it is considered that it is much bigger and with chambers even completely flooded. Others of the cavities are the Gallery of the Two Lakes, the Living room of the Sponges, the Gallery of the Midgets and the Gallery of the Megalocnus to the east of the Gothic Living room. In the other direction there are the passageway of Hatuey, Living room of the Ladies, Lake of the Dahlias and the American's Bathroom. 

Río Canimar

Area of 505, 8 has, protected with the category of "Outstanding Natural Element" and a group of great ecoturistic value. It is to 4, 5 km to the east of the city of Matanzas. The river has an extension that allows the sailing for 10 km from the outlet toward the interior. Here it is carried out: walks in boat and by horse, archaeological and naturalistic hicking. It counts with more than 11 archaeological places. It presents high geomorphologic values, of flora and fauna, and remarkable carsick formations.

Valle de Yumurí

One of the most attractive places in Cuba, maybe overcome only by Viñales Valley, in Pinar del Rio. It occupies the western end of the elevations Havana-Matanzas, it has about eight kilometres of diameter and it is surrounded, except for the West, for a mountainous border of some 150 m of height.  

Its origin is due to the natural excavation caused by the river Yumurí and its tributaries. The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca was dazzled with the beauty of the valley in 1930. Matanzas.

  Pharmaceutical museum

The only in Cuba and possibly in the world. The doctor's French drugstore Triolet, been founded in 1882, it was transformed into museum in 1964. It shows, among other original objects, their flasks of polychromatic porcelain, the books where they settled the prescriptions and a valuable collection of labels, as well as the table dispensarial that won Medal of Brass in the Exhibition of Paris, in 1900.  

Fuerte El Morillo

Built in 1720 and later remodeled. It was part of the defensive system of the city of Matanzas. In their suburbs it was murdered, in 1935, the revolutionary leader Antonio Guiteras. It admits 25-30 personnel's groups.

Historical Center

The historical center and their system of fortifications were declared in 1982 by the UNESCO, Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity. Without doubts, the main patrimonial value of the Cuban capital resides in the fact that its constructions embrace a fan of architectural styles conformed during almost five centuries, and it goes from the pre-Baroque to  the Baroque, something of the neo-Gothic one, the neoclassicism, the eclecticism,and from the  art noveau and the art decó, until the modern movement.

The Christ from Havana

 The Christ from Havana was inaugurated the 25 of December of 1958,  seven days before the fall of the dictatorship of Batista before the impetuous advance of the Rebellious Army. The monument was built in Italy and it is a work of the Cuban sculptress Gilma Mderas, recently deceased. 

Jesus' figure appears stand, with a hand in the chest and the other one on high, in attitude of blessing, it looks toward the city and he has a height twenty meters on the base of three. It weighs 320 tons and it is composed by 67 pieces. 

If we take into consideration the esplanade on the hill where it is located, their height rises to 51 meters on the level of the sea, which facilitates to see the Christ from Havana from different points of the city.  

Gran Parque Morro-Cabana 
The tourisComplex  Gran Parque Cabana is a historical-military place, which offers the possibility of a journey for five centuries of history. These gigantic strengths, witness of corsairs' times, pirates and of the attack of the English army, these are notably conserved. The visitor will be able to see her solid structures, very old batteries, magazines and moats. 
Every night at 21:00 hrs it is carried out the showy and traditional ceremony of the gunshot in the fortresse of San Carlos de la Cabana. In colonial times it  indicated the moment of closing of the doors of the wall and the placement of the chain that - located among the castles of El Morro and  la Cabana it impeded the entrance of ships to the port. Today it marks the beginning of the happy Havana night. 

 National Botanic Garden

It has more than 140 thousand examples of 4 thousand species in some 600 has. Among them it stands out more than 500 types of orchids, examples of the flora and tropical and subtropical vegetation of Cuba, Australia, Oceania and America, as well as a beautiful Japanese garden. 

La Rampa

La Rampa displaced fifty years ago  the Paseo del Prado. Located in the heart of Havana, in the neighborhood of el Vedado, it is a place very trafficked at any hour of the day and of the night. There the headquarters of four ministries  and  the Institute of the Radio and the Cuban Television, as well as offices of aviation companies and travel agencies. National museum of Fine Arts

The room of old art dedicates sections to Egypt, Greece and Rome; the European art includes samples of the traditional schools: Italy, Germany, Flanders, Holland, Spain, France and Great Britain. For the first time they are presented in way permanent selections of Asian and North American art. The museum offers directed visits and commented; it has a valuable Center of Information and stores where reproductions, works of collections, books and catalogs are offered

Colombus Necropolis

For their monumental facade and the artistic values that it stores in their areas, it is counted among the most luxurious cemeteries in the world, next to those of Genoa and Paris. It is the biggest of the island and one of the biggest from Latin America. Its rectangular structure is in form of Roman camp and it is composed by a reticle of streets, and lots. The Paseo Martí (well-known as Paseo  del Prado) it marks the limits among the municipalities of Old Havana and  Havana Center. On the other hand, the Memorial José Martí stores documents, pictures and objects related with the National Hero from Cuba; rooms of transitory exhibitions, and information on the most important facts there happened. In the high of the monument an excellent mirador exists from where a complete view of the capital is sighted.

Marine city, Havana has two international marine: the Marina Hemingway, toward the west of the city, for more than four centuries Havana, the capital of the Republic of Cuba, it is considered an privileged enclave for the communications and the trade. It is skirted by an extensive coast, in which can be enjoyed more than 14 Km. of beaches of quality. It is preserved by a green belt that guarantees the environmental health, to face with success the requirements of the call tourism of meetings and and the Marina Tarará, in the eastern beaches  that guarantee the realization of any type of nautical activity. History

San Cristóbal de La Habana was one of the first seven settlements that the Spanish colonizers founded in Cuba.  It was moved to its present site, on the shores of the port of Carenas, in 1519.
Its strategic position made it the key to the New World.  A turbulent history of attacks by corsairs and pirates, of struggle against the English and of capitulation to the Spaniards preceded the development of an incipient Cuban bourgeoisie which, in the 18th century, began to build public squares, mansions, cafés, theaters and ballrooms which still retain their splendor.
The capital introduced many important advances in the country: steam engines, railroads, gas lighting and the telegraph.  It is said that telephones made their first appearance here; photography arrived very soon after its invention, and so did movies and the radio.  In addition, Havana was one of the first cities in Latin America to introduce television.  Important figures in Cuba’s cultural life were born in the capital, including Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso; painter René Portocarrero; historian Eusebio Leal; filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea; and writers Alejo Carpentier, José Lezama Lima and Roberto Fernández Retamar.

Havana’s history, UNESCO declared Old Havana to be a part of world heritage.  Thanks to the painstaking work done by the Office of the Historian of the City, it began to be remodeled in such a way that cultural aspects were respected during the work of reconstruction, thus preserving its air of nobility.  Artists of all kinds worked to restore museums, art galleries and open spaces—such as the Basilica of San Francisco de Asís, headquarters of the Camerata Romeu and an excellent setting for the most select refined music of all time.
In the more modern part of Havana, with its large buildings and busy commercial life, important sociocultural projects have been carried out since the last few years of the ’90s.  The Anti-Imperialist Stand, on the Malecón Seawall Drive, is the best example of culture at the service of a nation’s ideas.  Among other things, the graduation ceremonies of high school  students and future teachers, technicians and art teachers are held here.  These last have carried out the very important task of taking art and other forms of culture to even the most isolated areas in the country.

Cuba’s capital offers you lots of places to visit, including recreation centers and places of historic and cultural interest.  In all of them, you can mix fun with getting to know the city.

When the sun goes down, the musical side of Havana comes into its own.  The Gato Tuerto, Pico Blanco and Dos Gardenias  specialize in songs that bring back treasured memories.  Boleros, soul music and other performances make those places absolute “musts.”  La Zorra y el Cuervo  and Irakere feature the best in jazz, with the music of George Benson, Boby Carcasés and Chucho Valdés—your host at the Irakere Club.
Famous Tropicana Nightclub and the Houses of Music of Centro Habana and Miramar—where you can enjoy music by the most prestigious Cuban and foreign groups—throb to the beat of contagious rhythms that are guaranteed to set your feet in motion.  The Benny Moré Party Room, in La Tropical, the best place to measure the current popularity of orchestras; the Macumba Habana Party Room; the Salón Rojo  at the Capri Hotel; the Parisién at the Nacional Hotel; and the Copa Room at the Riviera Hotel add more proof that Havana is a great place for meeting and enjoying life.

Cuba’s warm climate and many beaches within easy reach of the city have made these beaches one of the greatest attractions for all visitors.  Mégano, Santa María del Mar and Guanabo Beaches—all of which have an extensive network of hotels and tourist services—are east of the city.  The western part of the city has beaches in the Miramar district, with a developing hotel area, including Villa Cocomar and the villas and hotels at the Hemingway Marina and El Salado Beach. Here, we offer you fun-filled days in the open air, sunbathing, water sports, beach volleyball and the opportunity to simply lie on a beach lounging chair and relax.
Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is the most popular sport in this part of the country.  El Salado and Jibacoa Beaches are excellent sites for this, because of the clarity of the water near their seabed and the profusion of colorful fish that live there.
Other good sites for diving include the Comodoro Hotel, at 1st Avenue and 84th Street, Miramar, and Villa Mirador del Mar, in Santa María Loma, Habana del Este.

Water Sports

Havana and Havana Province have many facilities for kayaking, snorkeling, catamaraning, sailing, windsurfing and pedal boating.  For those who prefer cruises on yachts, there are marinas and water-sports bases all along the coast which offer moorings; Customs, commissary and drydock services; and boat rentals.

The Hemingway Marina is west of Havana at 23º 5.3’ north latitude, 82º 30.5’ west longitude, just a few minutes’ drive from the center of the city.
It has four canals, with moorings for 400 yachts, including large ones.  Its facilities include drinking water, 110- and 220-volt electric power, fuel, national and international telephone communications, satellite TV, medical services, weather forecasts, nautical charts, a ship chandler’s, a boat repair shop, provisions, other services for yachtsmen, and watchmen 24 hours a day.
The Ernest Hemingway International Yacht Club of Havana has more than 1000 members in 44 countries and sponsors important regattas and fishing tournaments, including the Ernest Hemingway International Marlin-Fishing Tournament.

Tarará Marina

The Tarará Marina is east of Havana, at 23° 10.5’ north latitude, 82° 13’ west longitude, just a 15-minute drive from the city.
It has an exclusive beach with excellent conditions for catamaraning, windsurfing, jet skiing, banana boating, fishing, sailing, going on excursions and living on board.  It also has an international scuba-diving center which offers beginners’, advanced and specialization courses in scuba diving.
The marina also has 56 air-conditioned houses, most of which have four or five rooms, and restaurants specializing in Cuban and international cuisine and seafood.

Introducción

La Evangelista, first name given by Christopher Columbus to the Isla de la Juventud, it was good for 400 year-old space to pirates and smugglers like base for their misdeeds, until their rebirth with the revolutionary victory of 1959. Well-known up to 1975 as Isla de Pinos, it received starting from this date their current name in fair recognition to the thousands of youths that there have studied and have developed their creative work. 
To the south of the county of Havana, separated by some 100 kilometers of sea of the biggest isle,  is the Isla de la Juventud (Youth's Island) place linked to legends adventures and traditions, also mixed with a nature only and numerous attractiveness for the tourism. The sadly celebrated Model Prison, unique installation of their type in Latin America that exhibits the characteristics of the prison system from the decade of the years 20 until the revolutionary stage is in same condition. In their galleys completed condemnations fighters for the independence of Cuba and opponents to the dictatorships that governed to the country up to 1959, among them Fidel Castro and other youths that assaulted the Barracks Moncada, in 1953. 

To the attractiveness offered by the beach Bibijagua, famous for their black sands due to the erosive action of the sea on the marble rocks, it is add the typical dance of the Sucu-Sucu and the celebrated system cavernario in the beach of Punta del Este, declared National Monument for their historical values.
